Questions in relation to the DVD ‘Shadowlands’

What are the sources of the pain and suffering depicted?
Love is a source of pain within the movie as C.S Lewis finally realises he loves Joy but its to late.
Family is as he lost his family at a young age.
The pain of losing his new wife just after he married her

What are the sources of the joy depicted?
When Joy appears to be getting better.
The first time Joy goes to his place.
Warnie is happy looking after Douglas as it gives him a family.
They are creating a family for themselves. (Warnie, Douglas, joy and Jack)

How are suffering and joy related in the video and in the broader sense for everybody?
They people that bring you joy can also bring you unimaginable pain and suffering.
Everybody experiences suffering and joy but for different reasons.

How can people ‘grow’ through suffering?
They learn how to cope with suffering and let go.
Get to know themselves better
Ask for help
Discover yourself through pain and suffering

How is the pain of losing a parent “re-lived” for C. S. Lewis in ‘Shadowlands’?
Douglas loses his mother at a young age just like Louis did.
Douglas doesn’t understand why his mother had to get sick- Louis agrees that he felt the same way when he lost his mother
Jack: "Why love, if losing hurts so much? I have no answers anymore: only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I’ve been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That’s the deal."

How does Lewis say he copes differently with the death of Joy than the death of his mother?
Because he allowed himself too love Joy knowing that he would suffer when she died, whereas with his mother he didn’t love her as much as he could with the knowledge that he would lose her.
Jack: "Why love, if losing hurts so much? I have no answers anymore: only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I’ve been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That’s the deal."

What are the responsibilities of a parent to the children he or she is leaving? What does Joy mean by “old enough to hurt”?
To ensure that they have someone to protect, love, care and lookout for their children who they are leaving behind.
We don’t understand last point

In the film, what key lines from the C. S. Lewis speech below are used repeatedly to express his attitude to God’s plan in allowing suffering?
“When a loved one dies we think of this as love cut short; like a dance stopped in mid-career or a flower with its head unluckily snapped off - something truncated and therefore lacking its due shape, whereas it is really a universal and integral part of our experience of love. It follows marriage as normally as marriage follows courtship, or as autumn follows summer. It is not a truncation of the process but one of its phases; not the interruption of the dance but the next figure.”

Everything has to happen, everyone has to die at some stage, natural part of life is death, everything has a purpose also people think that it is unfair because we lose people that we love, but it has to happen nevertheless.

Words: "love curt short" , "as atutumn follows summer", "not the interruption of the dance but the next figure"
